10 SYMPTOMS OF AN UGLY ROOM

Apartment Design

I had clients come to me saying: “I thought it was going to work better  than it does, and I don't know what to do now” You can avoid making expensive mistakes before they happen, please read this list of the 10 most commons symptoms of an ugly room before making any decisions:

1 - WRONG PAINT COLOR

Do the trim and main color in your room completely clash and not go together? Did you paint an accent wall with a color that doesn't go with the theme of the room? Is the wall color the first thing you notice when walking in? If you don't want an ugly room, the best is to avoid bright colors. Wall colors can make a huge difference to the look and feel of the space. Dingy wall colors can make a room look ugly. It is very important to select the right wall color for your room so select one that goes with the theme of your room and space.

2 - CLUTTER

A messy room is a big turn-off and it’s one of the signs of an ugly room. You need to get rid of the clutter! Your shoes, letters, keys, and  clothes, shouldn’t be on display for everyone else to see. Make sure there’s enough storage for all these things in your house and put them away, please. A tidy room is pleasing to the eye and makes one feel positive.

3 - HALF FINISHED PROJECTS

Did you start to paint 10 years ago then stop? Are some of your trim broken or missing? You didn't hang the light fixture yet??? Look around, do you have broken blinds or screens? If you have any of these you might have an ugly room for sure!

4 - POOR LIGHTING

Poor lighting can make a room look unwelcoming. You need to check if you have enough sources of light because multiple light sources are always needed in a single room. They could be in the form of overhead lights, scones, or dimmers for lamps. The room should always have the right combination of general, task, and accent lighting.  Lights and light colors impact the mood of the person living in the room and set a theme. If you don't want an ugly room, start checking if it’s well lit.

5 - BRINGING THE COLORADO TO MIAMI

Sometimes people, when returning from traveling, get inspired by the locals and want to design a room based around where they've just been. If you don't want an ugly room please try to maintain a sense of place. If the light and landscape are different, it won't translate to your space unless you live in a similar climate. Instead, take what you love about the setting and incorporate it  into your home. Keep your palette simple and use accessories that hint at the environment you love.

6 - WRONG SIZE RUG

Did you ever ask yourself what size rug you should buy for your room? A rug should be a large part of your room decor, therefore an important part is to get the right size and know how to place it. In your living room please don't forget to add the front legs of your sofas and chairs on the edge of the rug, so about half the depth of the sofa sits above the edge of the rug. Having a smaller rug where the only piece of furniture that sits on it is the coffee table, is the number one mistake in decorating. It will definitely make your room ugly and look smaller.

 7 - SCALE

People usually make the mistake of buying furniture that they like only checking if it will fit in their space. But it's more than that, it's understanding how all the furniture and accessories look together within the architecture of the home. A massive chair next to a little desk, a tiny frame on a large wall, or a huge bedside table next to a small bed will all throw off the overall look of the interior. When buying furniture, besides the practicality of the items, choose them so they all look great together, trying to avoid extremes. It doesn't matter how beautiful the piece is if it doesn't make sense in the space.  Your room will still look ugly.

 8 - CURTAINS

Hanging curtains too low can make the walls look shorter and the finish look a bit cheaper. Also having floor- length curtains gives a more luxurious and cozier finish. If you don't want your room to look ugly please don't hang short curtains. As a rule of thumb, if you hang your curtains higher and there is a long length of fabric, your room will look taller.

9 - TOO MATCHY MATCHY

Of course, we would like our home to look cohesive and everything to look good together. The fear that  the finished design won't look cohesive allows people to fall into the trap of matching furniture sets in their rooms. There's nothing wrong with a dining table and matching chairs, nor is there a problem with a sofa and matching armchair. However, sometimes these sets would benefit from being broken up by a couple of different chairs, or the same style sofa in a different fabric. This way, your home will look less like a furniture shop showroom or your grandma’s living room and more like you!

10- TOO MUCH OF A TREND

I love trends and watching how interior styles evolve. Interior trends adapt to our needs and want; they are representative of what we are drawn to right now. But you should aim for  timeless interiors that will stand the test of time. If  you fall in love with a trend, try to Incorporate it with a few pieces mixing them to your style. Trendy furniture and accessories are often short-lived so don't redo your room entirely with the “hot” style of the moment if you want to still love it in 5 years. Following many design trends, in a short time, your room will look dated and ugly instead of timeless.
